A freezer, just like any device that uses freon should have a couple inches of space behind it. It needs to have enough air flow to the condenser to shed heat so the gas will condense properly. It does that by blowing air across coils to turn the freon into a gas before it returns to the compressor. Freon is just a liquid with a low boiling point. So obviously the more air flow the better, but to be safe a couple of inches or about 2 finger widths should do it.
