“I could not find a way to make the sound work on the new monitor . It is an HP monitor and so it my computer. the computer is about 4 or 5 years ole. will the HDMI cable help me get sound?”

Yes, if the source of the sound provides data to the HDMI cable and the device at the end of the HDMI cable supports sound through HDMI. Most modern equipment supports this. Check with he manufacturer to make sure.

make sure the volumes are turned up on both the tv & computer/monitor.

First step would be to try a loaner from a friend & see if it works. If monitor is getting anything from source, I'd suspect the source has been obsoleted (reached end of it's tech life - not a pleasant thought). That recently happened to me. Good luck!
