If the two sensors have a direct line of sight at the same time to the remote they will both change colors. You can try holding the remote right up to the sensor of the light strip you want to change. If this won’t work then I would suggest exchanging these kits for the next size up because the next size up has a button on the light to change colors in addition to the remote. As for having two very unhappy teenage girls because of something so ridiculous, the only fix there is to give them a taste of some real world problems. They sound horrible. Good luck.
