Depends on the place. Winter in Hawaii, and in Minnesota are a little different from each other! I assume you are concerned about this because the garage gets very cold, as they do here in New England. ANY "frost free" refrigerator will operate poorly outside of normal room temperatures. There are generally more troubles in cold areas. The reason is simple: The thermostat is in the refrigerator, where the usual temperature is from 35° to 38°F. If the garage is-for example- at 40°, there will be hardly any heat gain to the refirgerator. No big deal if you have nothing but soda etc in the refrigerator, but say you have frozen hamburger in the freezer: Because the refrigerator's thermostat is happy, the freezer will not run either and the 'frozen' hamburger will be at 40°. Not so frozen! If it's very hot in the garage, the refrigerator takes a long time to cool down and the freezer get REALLY cold-sometimes down to as low as minus 40°!! How much energy is THAT gonna cost you? Put it in your basement-that's the most efficient place,
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I don’t have an answer, but have a comment.. Had we known that this refrigerator could not be kept reliably in the garage with freezer food for the winter (Michigan), we may not have purchased it. Best Buy employees did not explain this to us. It is now one year and two months beyond our purchase date. For all we know, the freezer meats may have been thawed within a year, but we did not check it. We assumed this newer refrigerator would be reliable! Over 20 pounds of grayish ground beef, bags of shrimp, homemade soups, jams...were partially thawed and had to be thrown away. We made sure it was level, it was. We bought two thermometers and both the refrigerator and freezer registered 40 degrees Fahrenheit. No compensation will be given to us for this refrigeration. Not a good use for our hard-earned income!
