Usually a non-dual voltage laptop will not charge unless it's in converter mode. Furthermore, it can actually short out the computer if someone tries to charge it in adapter mode. The instructions that come with the adapter tell you such precautions. Hopefully anyone else reading this should also read the instructions saying that high voltage items like hairdriers, laptops, etc need the item to be turned to converter mode or risk shorting out their device if they are not duel voltage.
