Beware: Insignia All-in-One Travel Adapter Failed

Like many reviewers have said, don't buy this adapter / converter. I recently purchased the Insignia All-in-One Travel Adapter and Converter with 2 USB ports for a cruise to Iceland on NCL cruise line, and it was a complete disappointment. While the USB ports worked perfectly, the Converter with the standard US plug failed miserably. It blew its internal fuse the first time I plugged in my laptop, which has a universal power supply. This rendered the converter useless for the rest of the trip. To make matters worse, the cruise ship had standard US plugs built into the room, so I ended up just plugging my laptop directly into the ship's wall plug. This made the converter entirely unnecessary. For future travelers, I strongly recommend just buying the various travel plug adapters instead of purchasing a converter. You don't need it, and this Insignia All-in-One Travel Adapter and Converter doesn't even work. Plus, it's really large and inconvenient to carry around. Save your money and avoid this product.

    Haven't Got It To Work

Got to the U.K. and it sucks. The power indicator shows it's getting power but it won't charge my laptop. When I try to charge my Android phone, I get a notification that it's charging slowly. And I get the message every 2 seconds with an annoying sound for my phone. I think it's using more energy to alert me than it is charging. The only thing that seems to work is the USB for charging my Fitbit. I had to go out and buy a simple plug adapter for about 10 bucks that works like a charm. This has been a complete waste of money.

    Fire hazard!!!

Buyers aware a potential fire hazard. I purchased this travel converter for an oversea trip. Within the first 5 minutes of use, I noticed a strong plastic odor coming from the device. To make matters worse, the converter started getting really hot to the touch while using it to charge 2 iphones. It is well within the wattage and amage and that shouldn't be overloaded the device. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this product due to safety concerns. If you're looking for something that's going to last and not emit a burning smell or overheat, I suggest you keep looking.

I was staying at a hotel in Scotland which was built in the 1600s. When i plugged my phone charger into it, the charger melted and the room was filled with an electrical smell (the Scottish History Society would not have been impressed). The fuse in the converter did not prevent overheating. This item should be removed from the shelf immediately.

The adapter/converter would work better for Australia if it also had the third prong for the ground to help stabilize it. The weight of the adapter/converter causes it to sag while plugged in creating a possible hazard.

Thank you for sharing your feedback on the Insignia All-in-One Travel Adapter and Converter. We apologize that it did not meet your expectations, particularly with regards to its design and safety features. We understand that the lack of a third prong for grounding may cause the adapter to sag and create a potential hazard. We take the safety of our customers very seriously, and we will consider your feedback as we continue to improve our products. We appreciate your suggestion and will look into adding this feature to future designs. In the meantime, we recommend that customers use the adapter on a flat surface or secure it with a non-slip mat to minimize the risk of accidental falls. We value your input and appreciate your honesty. The only reason for one star is because you can’t leave zero stars. Bought two of these for our trip to Italy and first time using them with my apple chargers they smoked and as I disconnected them they were extremely hot. I am going to try and return them but since I tree out the boxes that were bulky so I could fit them in my luggage, I don’t know if they will take them back. Would never recommend these!!!

Took it to Paris in September and it worked great. Took it to London in November and it won’t maintain a constant current. Tried several plugs and then bought a different adapter in London and that worked fine. Of course it’s past the return date. Thanks Best Buy!

I needed an adapter for Ireland and thought this would give me flexibility for other trips. It worked most of the time but the problem with the wide cube that it sometimes covered the switches next to each outlet that are common in the hotels I stayed. So I would turn the outlet on, plug it in cube which then turned off the outlet. This wasn't true at all hotels and when I had an outlet that was larger, it worked very well. I liked also having the usb port for charging multiple devices at same time. It's larger than a plain adapter so that takes up more room. The adapter does allow you to connect in multiple continents not just UK/Ireland. It wasn't that expensive.

I’m using it in Europe now. The device is very warm after using it all night. I don’t know if the very warm converter is a defect. I only rated it 3 stars due to the warmth after use. It cools very quickly after it is unplugged. I’m concerned about a potential fire due to the warmth factor.

It worked for the most part, it definitely gets very hot, even when it wasn’t outputting any power, I would not trust it to be plugged in overnight while connected to a charger. I feel like it needs a fan just to manage the heat it produces, the fact that it doesn’t is concerning. That said, it did the job, it was better to have it than not have it when I traveled. The size is a huge plus, very compact and portable for what it can deliver.

    Waste of Money

    Posted .

My wife and I were heading to Europe for a cruise, with 2 nights in a Barcelona hotel prior to the cruise, and 2 nights in a Venice hotel after the cruise. Prior to leaving, I went to Best Buy, told the salesperson my plans, knowing I would need a voltage converter in the hotel rooms in order to use my CPAP machine. He told me this product would meet my needs. I purchased this product on his advice, and did not open the box until I got to the hotel in Barcelona. Upon opening the box and reading the instructions, it clearly said “converter mode is designed to be used only for short periods of time (approximately 10 minutes), and also “The converter cannot be used with low-wattage appliances (0-25W)”. My CPAP machine is a low-wattage appliance, and needs to operate for the entire night, not just 10 minutes. This device is ONLY suitable for things like curling irons or hair dryers, NOT CPAP machines, and for about 10 minutes maximum. I ended up spending 2 hours hurrying between stores in Barcelona, like a madman, trying to get a converter that would allow me to use my CPAP machine before the stores closed, and finally, frustrated, exhausted and disappointed, I gave up. The four nights in hotel rooms were miserable for my wife, as I snore horribly without using my CPAP machine. Upon returning to the United States, I went to AAA Travel, and for about $60, purchased a converter that should work for future trips to Europe, but my wife had to put up with lack of sleep for 4 nights because this product would NOT run my CPAP machine. I tried the CPAP machine once for about 2 minutes, and it would NOT work with this device…not even for 2 minutes.
