• Must be passive. Didn't work at all for me. But a less-sleek adapter I bought from Amazon worked great.

• I have been using it on my 60" TV as a third monitor and so far have not had any problems. It is also taking care of the sound so that the TV outputs to my stereo for 5.1 sound. Not sure if this helps I do not know if it is active or passive. I just plugged it in and it works.

• If you are using a 3rd monitor, you may need to use a third party USB adapter which would require an additional set of drivers. The adapter has another video adapter in it to drive the 3rd monitor.
