Didn't matter. When I went to purchase the cables the Best Buy Rep said it was an active adapter.

It is active and does pass audio through hdmi port.

This is an active adapter. Make sure your device can accept it. Should have a DP ++ emblem on the port if it can.

What is the difference between an active and passive adapter? It just plugs into the Mac and the HDMI into the TV and you can see what's on your Mac on the TV. You can even make a duel desktop out of it.
