“I am planning on using this with an xbox one. Typical gaming headsets let you hear directional game audio (e.g. you can hear what direction footsteps are coming from). I am wondering if these do that as well. Thanks.”

They should work fine. It's a stereo headset.

I know only that when I want to use dictation to write a letter, note, or email, by hitting the "fn" key on my iMac, that I can begin the dictation. Or I can listen to music, etc. Sorry. Sound like much more sophisticated head set are needed for gaming. But maybe not.
