“Volume controls on the brick change only the volume of the output on my iPhone 6s. There appears to be no independent amplification of the input and decent volume is only achieved at max phone volume setting. Is this by design?”

I read this complaint before purchasing. I don't find there to be a problem. I read about this prior to purchasing and own an Iphone. After in-store testing, I felt the levels were acceptable. You may want to try to utilize the AUX-IN port on the Bose, as this may resolve your issue, though it wouldn't be a "wireless" solution.
