“When placed on 4.5 volt external power, why does it continue to wear down the batteries?”

• I don't know about external power, but this model uses more power than the model that is not an MP3. I use rechargeable batteries and they have to be recharged after listening to one CD. The model that is not MP3 lasts at least 3-4 CDs, and often more.
