You plug the headphones into the optical port (you need to buy another wire) volume for tv is controlled by the remote, volume for headphones controlled on the headphones. So yes, you can listen to the headphones and the TV’s volume can be up high or off.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes. I bought an optical splitter, so I could plug my soundbar and headphone base into the t.v. That way the t.v volume can be at any volume (even off) and the headset volume can be at any level at the same time. The t.v. has to be compatible to set the audio format to PCM. If not, I have found it's very speratic. (Sometimes you get volume, Sometimes you dont).
