No, These can be used with the PC sync cable connected to the camera, or by utilizing the light sensors that will allow them to flash when they detect the flash from your camera.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I use the rather pricy Canon ST-E3-RT speedlite radio transmitter on my camera to trigger my two 600EX-RT. The interface looks just like the interface on the 600EX-RT-Yay Canon! Before I had that transmitter, however, I used one of the pocket wizard radio systems. I found it a little clumpsy having pocket wizards dangling from my speedlites. Also, since the 600EX-RT has a built in radio transmitter, it can be on the camera hotshot and trigger other 600EX-RT speedlites that are off camera (but that makes for a rather expensive trigger if it is not contributing to the lighting setup). In that case, I believe the speedlite on the camera is the master while the others are the slaves. The ST-E3-RT is half the price of the 600EX-RT speedlite. With that on your camera you're not wasting a flash just for triggering purposes. I might add that Canon's ST-E3-RT speedlite radio transmitter is only compatible with the 600EX-RT and not with older flashes. I read that it is because the ST-E3-RT only works on radio transmission and does not have an optical transmission setting. Too bad. The 600EX-RT has radio & optical setups in it's menu along with master/slave so, with that in mind, I could probably bring my older Canon 580EX speedlite into the equation using a 600EX-RT as master. I am now won over by the ST-E3-RT though which means I will be investing in more of the phenomenal 600EX-RT speedlites. There's no looking back at my old 500EX.
