I had a similar thing happen to me too. I have a MacBook Pro and it did the same thing and ruined my expensive laptop. I had to talk with apple support and had help with them to finally get internet recovery and reinstall os high Sierra all over again. Either there’s a glitch with the Macs or the High Sierra update that doesn’t make it work. I’m returning the item since it almost broke my new MacBook Pro.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If your built-in ethernet port no longer works this is a good alternative to use if you need an internet connection on that machine. A bonus is that it is more than likely locally available since BestBuys are everywhere.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The ethernet connection in the back of my computer had gone bad. The model PC I have will not allow for the installation of another board so I can't circumvent the problem.. The solution was this little ethernet USB adapter plugged into a port on the front of my computer (I had no ports left in the rear) has allowed me to switch to my wifi internet connection. I am no computer whiz as I am 83 years old but it certainly solved the issue I was having. I would connect and immediately it would be getting numerous messges telling me I was no longer connected to the internet, I was not connected to scan, etc., I would begin again, all would be OK for about a minute and I would be thrown off the internet again. Geek squad hooked me up using wifi and that was OK for about a week and then the same issue began again, thus providing us with the diagnosis of a bad ethernet board. Hope this helps.
