“Disappointed that this speaker does not do phone calls. Should I take it back and get a Google Home or will the Insignia's firmware definitely be upgraded to make phone calls? If so, when? I do want to make calls and don't want to miss my return option.”

I heard that Insignia has been telling they will do a software update since a year but have not. So i would not expect it soon.
