“speaker has two fail "modes" ... it displays "bt" or "LOAd" blinks ... no other response to either touch or voice. Google Home (running on android phone) does not display any connection or option for the speaker. Is it toast?... got it for christmas 2017”

"bt" means Bluetooth is active. The speaker is waiting for a paired device to send it audio content to play. Turn it off by saying "Hey Google, Bluetooth Off". I'm sure "LOAd" is something similar, should be covered in the manual or online.
