Your photos and contacts should be fine if they are just replacing the battery. Mine were. I lost a year's worth of photos (since my iCloud storage was full) when I dropped my powered phone into the water. but if the phone is undamaged and not shorted out, then you photos etc. should be there when the battery is replaced. At least that was my experience.
