The machine when a pad is placed on it knows what it is to do. Example, put on the dusting it just does that, floor cleaning it now sprays the water, etc. The pads are clearly marked when you purchase them and based upon what you intend to do those are the pads you buy and use. I will note they have a reusable pad that I believe does it all. The broom aspect should be handled by the I Robot Vacuum not this little guy that covers a very small area. So, no I would not use it like a broom. I believe the other model may allow you to use Swifter pads, etc.
