It does not need an app to control it. It will work fine as a stand alone unit. The app is great for easy registration, battery level checks, and ordering spare pads, but it is not a deal breaker. The app can also set a spot clean radius but this can also be accomplished to an extent by setting the virtual wall mode on the unit itself. Bottom line, the app is not really required.

You do not have to have an iPhone for this. You don't have to control it by a phone, but the app lets you schedule cleaning.

I own one and it doesn't have any "app control" that I am aware of. You do not need a phone to program it. You can program it to keep it in a certain area but is difficult to master the technique necessary to make it follow instructions. The programming is done by interacting with the unit itself, not via a phone, tablet, or computer. .
