We do not have a smart phone, but you can easily set up, charge and run the model we have without the need for some of the more expensive features of the higher-priced models. One example of those high $$$ features is a model that will empty itself when it is full, but without spending the extra money I can check it and do that rather easily myself as needed! Hope this helps a bit!

You can with the older models. Or simply press the o lean button to start. When done the roomba returns to base to recharge.
