No, you don't need the internet for the irobot to work. It is more convenient to have internet and a smartphone to remotely control the device. I see a map of the area cleaned by the device on the smartphone, and it notifies me if it encounters a problem. Without internet, I manually push the start button on the Irobot, and it cleans, and if it faces a problem, it announces the issue, so I must be in hearing range.
