“Why doesn't this work with other devices other than auto. Sales rep in stor said it would as long as I had 3.5 Jack to plug it into. I can't get it to work with anything but car.”

It should work fine with any device that has an auxiliary jack. Make sure you are setting your source to auxiliary, obviously.
