It doesn't necessarily cancel but if the volume is high enough you wont hear anything around you. Yes you can make and receive phone calls you would have to manually make the phone call and after you would be able to have the call through your buds and if you are receiving a call click once and it connects you and click twice to hang up. You have to get use to them like most bud headphones but it does have different sized buds to help fit better and more comfortable, by the third day I didn't even feel them just don't leave them in for too long
