Hey Jerardo, You do need the case in order to turn on the earbuds.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Short answer, yes. Several times I have left range of my phone with one of the buds in, and when I got back to the phone it failed to connect. This is a 1 in 50 chance, only happens rarely, but when it does, you have to put both buds in the case for a second. When you do, they pair with the base and with each other, clear their memory, then wait to pair externally. I am impressed with this product after 2 months or so of use. Little issues like this matter less to me when I only paid $20
