“Does the detachable faceplate decrease the size of the stereo? My car has a 172mm wide opening, the manufacturer website has the "installation size" as 182mm wide. Is it smaller without the faceplate or is the faceplate necessary for the installation?”

Yes but only slightly I wouldn't recommend trying to shove the radio into a small gap it certainly won't fit.. because I tried it myself and was very aggravated.
