“Will a laptop SSD (SATA or M.2) connected via USB work? Or is it too much of a power draw? I have A LOT of hi-res music I would like to leave connected to the unit permanently & am trying to figure out large storage options.”

• Sure, if drive is formatted properly. We provide standard USB power,so as long as your drive can power via USB, in theory, this will work.
