A paper filter is not required when using this. It has a metal mesh filter of its own.

No for most grinds, but when I use expresso grind, which is very fine, I've had the machine clog. However with the little ball in orange plastic it pumps the clogged area open again. Directions for that are in the little book that comes with the machine.
