You should never disconnect anything when using the converter. Which ever speakers you tie into, a simple splice will do.

I bought a harness from plug n play harnesses that way you don’t have to cut anything in your factory system you would hook this up to the t harness and connect the harness to the back of your stereo.

You want to tap into the speaker. You also have to ground it out

You can tap into the speaker wires wherever it’s most convenient. I found that in my truck the rear speaker wires are easily accessible in the pillar between the front and back doors . 
If you’re installing in a sedan, the wires for the speakers in the back deck are generally easy to get to also.
No need to disconnect the speaker entirely.
