“I just got my dishwasher installed and it is making an odd sound. I haven’t had a new dishwasher in 17 years, so i am not sure if this sound is normal or not. It is a very rapid vibrating sound or like it is straining. It happens periodically.”

You are probably hearing the blade that pulverizes any food particles so they can be pumped out with the dirty water. I'm used to it now and have plans to put it to the test by not rinsing, or even scraping food off thoroughly, and seeing how it does. Hope this helps!
