“It would appear that my speakers only turn off when idle and connected to the analog input. They don't power down when connected via USB. Has anyone else experienced this?”

It could be that your computer is keeping the speakers on while the computer is on. To make sure this isn't an issue with the automatic powering, power down your computer and see if the speaker will power down after about 20 minutes when connected via USB.
