These do have a pre amp built in that can be turned on or off. So if your turntable doesn't have a preamp, there's a switch in the back of the speakers that turn on its preamp. Your cd player can connect via USB, Aux, or RCA.

If you are using a turntable/CD Player WITH a phono-preamp, set the switch on the back of the R-40PM to "PHONO". If your turntable/CD Player does NOT have a phono-preamp, set this switch to "LINE". There is an (analog) AUX input (which I've not tested) but if your CD player's a handheld one, its output could go in there. Or, if it is a stereo system's (larger) CD player which outputs a standard, stereo line-level signal (the RCA plugs), that cable would plug straight into the RCA jacks on the speaker (labelled 'phono'). Make sure the Phono/Line switch is set to "line." For your turntable, the same phono input can be used for it, but you have toggle that same switch to "Phono". So the only way I can see to have both CD and turntable going in at once is to use the AUX for the CD and the Phono for the turntable. That configuration would allow you to use them without a preamp, or even a stereo system for that matter. It also has and standard SPDIF input for the digital input. For the other digital input, there's a USB port. (There is also a USB port labeled "service" but I don't know what that's for) HTH
