Although the wrist pad is not removable, Lapgear also has a similar lap desk without the wrist support. It's even a bit less expensive.

No, it is part of the desk, but I don't see why you would want to. I find it comes just barely above the keyboard level of the laptop and you will not mind it at all. This is the best lapdesk I've ever used, it doesn't make my lap hot at all, and it's comfortable and light.
