No, it cannot be placed vertically. Additionally I have had a very bad experience with this fan. In power spikes, this fan simply dies and cannot be repaired. They sent me replacement fans twice, but after 6 months, they just stopped working. Lasko does not provide the parts even if I determine what the problem is. (I am an electrical engineer). The electronics in the fan is poor quality.
