The keyboard is firm, but not stiff. the way it connects with the tablet is with a magnet connector, but the way it connects is not the same as a laptop would be open. it is a bit flimsy. I haven't tried to do much on my lap that would require the keyboard, but the kickstand is vert solid in a variety of positions and you can use the on-screen keyboard to type. Hope this helps.
