Leaving the unit plugged in will probably not damage or affect the battery life in the short term, but in may long term. The best option is those laptops with a feature which will stop battery charging, either for a chosen time, or at a certain range, such as when the battery is charged 90% or more. Batteries work best and last longest when you avoid the extremes of charge, such as under 15% or more than 90.
