Hello, your alarms should have an option to set the volume independent of the speaker itself. If your device is behaving strangely, we recommend performing a factory reset by holding down the Volume + and Volume – buttons at the same time for 10 seconds. Alternatively, you can stream music from YouTube with your voice (no phone needed). If your issue persists, please get in touch with our support team at 866-426-0911.

I didn't make any other changes after telling it to set its volume to zero after it heard something on the television and spoke up quite abruptly startling us out of near sleep.

Set your alarm one minute before the current time and set the volume mid way. If the alarm sounds, then the volume is in sync with your Chromecast as the alarm is probably linked with Chromecast.
