The fan is set up in the recirculating configuration from the factory. It vents in an area just above the microwave door, which is about 2 inches proud of the face of a standard 13” deep cabinet. There are louvres to direct the airflow away from the cabinet You would need ductwork installed and to switch the configuration of the fan if you were to choose either the roof or wall venting option. Switching the fan is relatively easy, running ductwork through finished walls, or up to and through the roof, not so much so.

Yes, the LG MVEL2137F over-the-range microwave can vent by recirculation when ductwork is not available. The ExtendaVent 2.0 feature expands to provide powerful ventilation over more of your cooktop's surface area, even in recirculation mode. This microwave is designed to effectively vent in recirculation mode when traditional ducted venting is not possible.
