The lower ice-maker only makes craft ice (i.e. the round balls). I am not sure if you can buy a regular ice-maker and replace it or not. With all the electronic controls, I would be hesitant.

It produces 1 batch of round ice (3 pieces) at a time. In 3 ICE mode (default setting), the Craft Ice icemaker produces 1 batch of round ice (3 pieces) every 18 - 30 hours.
