An airgap is a physical break in the dishwashers dishcharge line. This "gap" prevents the dishwasher from being backfilled with wastewater should there be a backup in the sink or drain line. It is standard procedure to route the dishwashers drain line is such a way that it is higher than the flood line of the sink, thus preventing the sink from back siphoning into the dishwasher. Some municipalities require an actual physical break in the drain line and this requires an air gap connector which typically is installed using one of the holes in the deck of the sink. You connect the dishwasher drain to one side of the air gap and then connect a 2nd drain line to your sink drain. Inside the air gap is a physical break between the two lines that prevents any back siphoning.
