• Washing only one piece always gets out of balance because the piece tends to end up on the wall of the basket. The manual says to always wash several pieces at a time in order that they can evenly distribute their weight during the spin cycle.

• Only had ours for about a month but no problem with out of balance. I guess it depends on the definition of small.
