Not on the screen. Just the trim. I would think it's either a slow hdmi cable or loose connection somewhere.

Maybe ask your MIL if the TV has a protective film on the screen like when you buy a new printer of something that's covered in plastic to see if she sees on on the screen before making an hour or so drive.
