• HDMI can pass higher-resolution audio, including the formats found on Blu-ray: Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. These formats can't get transmitted across optical. ^Daphane

• No. Only HDMI Arc or eArc can pass through audio. The optical cable can send Dolby Digital 5.1 from the TV to the sound bar though.
