I followed the cleaning instructions and after the first use the griddle is already discolored

It is a heavy-duty, cast-iron, non-stick surface designed to fit over the center oval burner. It is not dishwasher safe, as the high heat and detergents in a dishwasher can damage the non-stick coating and cause rust. It should be hand-washed with warm, soapy water, dried thoroughly, and not placed in the oven's self-clean cycle. You should hand-wash only with a mild detergent and a non-abrasive sponge, and dry it immediately to prevent rusting. As with any cast-iron cookware, the cast-iron griddle should be seasoned. The seasoning is a layer of oil that has molecularly bonded with the surface of the cast iron pan to create a non-stick and food-safe surface.
