You cannot set them anywhere. There are slots that the feet go into. I too have a table that is narrower than the 45.8 inch maximum width for the stand. I was skeptical that the TV would be stable with the 16.7 inch setting. But, the TV is completely stable with the feet set at that setting. I hope this helps.
