No smart phone is required. You can handle everything through the remote. There is an LG app for smart phones that gives you more control of the on-screen pointer and keyboard functionality via smart phone but you’ll do just as fine w/the standard remote included.

No it’s a Smart TV, It streams you tube, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc, several hundred Ip channels from its own internal software.
