Yes, this is capable of reading CDs and DVDs. You will still need software that can play the audio CD or video DVD which if not already installed is available in the Microsoft store or by other providers (some available for free). If you want to write to the CD or DVD, the device will do it as you have the proper media in it. This device will not work with Blueray disks.
