It connects via USB, and it gets its power (5V) from the USB port it is connected to. You would need a USB Y cable which is a is a special splitter cable with one connector for a device and two connectors (usually Type-A) to plug into a computer, designed to provide extra power to power-hungry peripherals like external hard drives or optical drives that need more energy than a single USB port can offer if your PC/Laptop's USB port cannot provide enough power, so that it draws from two ports simultaneously to avoid needing an external AC adapter. One USB plug handles data, while the extra plug provides supplemental power, allowing devices to function reliably from just the computer's ports. The USB Y cable is not supplied with the drive and will have to be purchased separately...^Ivan.
