“I am running Windows Home. Will I need additional software besides what's included with unit? I want to use this mainly as storage to free space on my Hard drive. Some will be short term saves. Can I erase files? Can I add more later?”

This drive is not a storage devices. The LG Super Multi Compatibility optical drives can read and write different types of disc formats in one convenient package. The drive comes with an Install Disc for Windows that you have to install on your PC/Laptop. ^Daphane
