Windows just hates watching DVDs for free, using a third party software is how you can watch the movies off of the drive. The drive is not what requires the subscription. I personally use VLC off of the microsoft store

We understand that you're experiencing an issue with the LG SP80NB80 Ultra Slim Portable DVD Writer not working after a power outage, and you're seeking a free solution. While we understand your issue, it's possible that the power outage affected the connection or settings required for the DVD writer to work. First, we recommend ensuring that the device is properly connected to your laptop and that the necessary drivers are installed. You can also try restarting your laptop and reconnecting the DVD writer to see if that resolves the issue. As for any subscription requirements, this might be related to software or applications used to play DVDs. Some DVD players may require specific software that might come with the device, but it could also depend on third-party apps. We suggest checking the software installed on your laptop to see if there's an activation process. Since you mentioned that Geek Squad helped with the compatibility, we recommend reaching out to them directly for assistance with this situation, as they can provide further troubleshooting or clarification regarding any subscription or setup concerns. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-8x-external-usb-double-layer-dvdrw-cd-rw-drive-black/5852919.p?skuId=5852919 Please send us a private message on Social Media @LGUSSupport, and we’d be happy to guide you further with any troubleshooting or questions you may have!
