Optical drives do not have any storage capacity beyond the medium used. A CD-R disc contains about 700MB of storage capacity. A DVD-R or DVD+R disc has about 4.7GB of storage capacity. A dual layer DVD-R or DVD+R disc has about 8.5GB in storage capacity. The actually storage capacity is about 5-10 percent less than the rated capacity because of formatting. Depending on how much storage capacity you require, a better [and less expensive in terms of how much you pay for each GB of storage] option for doing a hard drive back up is either an external hard drive [HDD] or an external Solid State Drive [SSD] as they have larger storage capacities than CD-R/DVD-R/BD-R discs can offer. Some people suggest backing up to the cloud, but I prefer not to entrust sensitive data to complete strangers.
